235 more cases of Covid-19 have been added to the Isle of Wight's overall figures this afternoon (Friday).

The Public Health England figures have been updated, ahead of a government press conference which is expected to be led by the Prime Minister.

The cumulative total for the Isle of Wight now stands at 5005, since the pandemic started.

However, January alone is responsible for more than 3,000 of those cases.

On Thursday, 198 cases were recorded, with 170 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile the rolling average rate, per 100,000 people, stands at 1,167.4 for five days to January 10, according to the government's interactive map.

The Isle of Wight has the fourth highest average rolling rate.

Earlier, we revealed the number of people being treated in St Mary's Hospital.

As of Tuesday, January 12, there were 66 Covid patients - with 11 on ventilators - a rise, compared to the previous week.

The hospital's ICU is one of the smallest in the country and work has been carried out to extend the number of beds from six - with an aim to create 24.
