TEN donkeys from France will start new lives at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary.

The donkeys have all recently received their passports and documentation to cross the border, despite the dual challenges of Brexit and Covid.

A spokesperson from the sanctuary said: "Getting this job done has been quite a challenge in lockdown and virus conditions, when workplaces have been closed and staff have been working from home.

"We are now working with our haulier, John Parker International Equine Transport, and they are trying to deal with a host of complications.

"There is still a significant backlog of equine travel caused by a combination of the closure of the French border in December and the new virus regulations that were put in place.

"Meanwhile Brexit has created a new set of requirements which are having to be dealt with."

The team, including Tracey who has been looking after the donkeys, is working to get the donkeys across the Channel and the Solent to Wroxall as soon as possible.

The new arrivals are called Javette, Jiva, Jenny, Jumpy, Josephine, Junon, Koko, Kitchy, Hope and Charity.

The sanctuary is currently closed to the public.
