Like many Islanders, I am sad we are back in a national lockdown but I’m heartily sick of people constantly whinging that the government have done too little too late.

In my opinion, it would have been wise to go back to the lockdown in early December but Boris let us have a relatively easy few days over Christmas.

This has no doubt exacerbated the situation as I’m sure many went well over the recommendations of numbers etc.

I can see he had little choice as although the vast majority of people do not have religious beliefs or followings they “celebrate“ Christmas.

The uproar that would have followed had the government cancelled Christmas would have been immense, yet the same people do not see that we are now reaping the benefits of a few days of freedom.

I also appreciate the affects of school closures on working families and the children coming up to exams in particular but while Covid seems to have little impact on the young I seriously believe they can be effective carriers of the disease.

Since they are not compelled to wear masks can they be partially responsible for the spread of the virus?

I feel the lockdown is most effective if it is as complete as it was in March but I do understand how crippling it is on all but a very few businesses.

If the public want to preserve their local businesses and high streets then stop buying online and be patient and wait until restrictions are lifted.

I am appalled at the way some people go into shops to look at and even try on garments and goods to then leave the shop empty handed, go home and then buy it online.

The shop has all the overheads and work to get no business this really is not helping them to exist.
