THE jail term given to Fort Victoria child rapist Graham Medway is to be reviewed to see if it was unduly lenient.

Medway was sentenced on Friday at the Isle of Wight Crown Court for the horrific sexual attack on a three year old girl, who he snatched into the bushes after she ran away from her family.

He was given a 14 year prison sentence, to serve nine in jail and five on licence.

This will now be reviewed following an application for the sentence to be re-considered.

A spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office said: “We have received a request for the case of Graham Medway to be considered under the unduly lenient sentence scheme.

"The Law Officers have 28 days from sentencing to consider the case.”

Judge Roger Hetherington explained the sentencing guidelines in court.

The maximum sentence for rape of a child under 13 is life imprisonment, and jail terms can range from six to 19 years.

Judge Hetherington said the case fell into a category where 12 years would be appropriate as a starting point, but this had to then be reduced by 25 per cent to take into account Medway's guilty plea, which took it down to nine years.

The judge was able to add an additional five years on, due to additional factors in the case.

There was an element of abduction, an element of planning, the location being in a popular area for families, and the young age of the victim.

The sentence will be reviewed within the guidelines and a decision will be made within 28 days.
