The Floating Bridge will be off again today (Thursday), between 9:30am and 12:30pm.

A piece of the prow on the Cowes side will be fixed - just weeks after the same piece came apart on the East Cowes side.

When the chain ferry returned to service on December 30, the Isle of Wight Council said there had been a problem with pipework on the east prow.

The Isle of Wight County Press asked for further detail.

The local authority's councillor in charge of transport, Ian Ward said: "The problem was caused by the failure of a union at one end of a ridged hydraulic pipe.

"Nothing was actually broken. The union pulled apart, probably caused by vibration during the time it’s been in service.

"However, further investigations are being carried out."

The chain ferry was also off for a time yesterday (Wednesday), when the Isle of Wight Council said it had had a faulty fuel gauge.

A foot passenger launch will be in service today.

Update: The service has resumed.
