A spokesperson for Freshwater Fire Station said: "This is 20-year-old Oliver from Freshwater smiling from his hospital bed this evening.

"Thankfully, apart from a lot of bruising and a couple of small stitches, Oliver is doing fine and is spending the night in St Mary’s, hoping to return home tomorrow to continue his recovery.

"After Oliver’s motorcycle and a van collided this morning while he was travelling to work, Oliver was thrown around five metres along the road, landing on the tarmac.

"Oliver’s bike was severely damaged but very sensibly he was wearing proper protective bike gear and helmet which without doubt saved him from serious injury.

"We wish Oliver well as he continues to recover."

Oliver’s mum, Lisa, thanked the emergency services. She said: “I want to say a massive thank you to all those involved in helping my son after his accident today.

"Ollie was incredibly lucky to have not sustained any serious injuries, I’m a very grateful mummy."
