ISLE of Wight Police have confirmed a beach party involving at least 25 people was reported on New Year's Eve.

At around 8pm, police received a report that a large gathering had been seen breaching Tier 4 Covid-19 regulations near the Paddock Drive slipway in Bembridge.

Gerry Price, posting on the Bembridge Community Notice Board Facebook Page, said she saw people partying around a fire on Forelands Beach.

Several other Islanders said they had seen the gathering and reported it to the police, including Toni Swann, who said she counted at least 25 people.

Hampshire Constabulary says on New Year’s Eve, it did not issue any fixed penalty notices relating to the current Health Protection Regulations on the Isle of Wight.

A spokesperson for Isle of Wight Police said: "We received a report at 8.06pm that at least 25 people had gathered on the beach earlier that afternoon at around 4.15pm.

"Officers were not deployed as the report was received nearly four hours after the alleged breach had taken place.

"The matter has been filed pending any further lines of enquiry becoming available."
