New figures show 56 Islanders have now died in hospital on the Isle of Wight, within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test.

They include deaths on Boxing Day, and on December 22, 23 and 28.

Hospital deaths are recorded by the NHS separately from community deaths - which cover those who have died in care homes, in the Isle of Wight hospice and at home.

In all, 108 people have now died on the Isle of Wight.

In data released today (Wednesday) by ONS, which lags behind the current figures and applies to deaths until December 18, 48 people have died from Covid-19 related conditions in care homes, three at home and one in the hospice.

Meanwhile, positive coronavirus tests have been rising sharply on the Island - with more than 1,500 recorded since the pandemic began - of which 44 were announced yesterday (Tuesday).

A new cases update is due at around 4pm today.

At around 3pm, Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to make an announcement on tier restrictions.
