THE Isle of Man TT 2021 has been cancelled — but Diamond Races organisers are still hopeful they can bring their event to the Isle of Wight.

On the Isle of Man, the local government cited the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic as the reason for abandoning the traditional May bank holiday event.

Minister for Enterprise, Laurence Skelly, said: “We do not underestimate the disappointment this decision will cause to many people. However, we are making an early, logical decision to provide certainty and clarity to race fans and everyone else involved.

“The TT relies on thousands of volunteers and officials across a wide range of organisations and we could not move responsibly towards a positive decision to proceed in planning for 2021, which would involve committing to welcoming tens of thousands of people to the Island in June, despite the progress towards a vaccination programme globally and on the Island.

“This decision has not been taken lightly but has been taken in the interests of the Island, the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors, and is in line with our ongoing pandemic strategy."

However, the Department for Enterprise said it would work with involved parties towards delivering the Classic TT and Manx Grand Prix races, scheduled for August and September.

Despite attempts by the County Press, there is no official word from Diamond Races organisers about the future of their inaugural event, which they hope will take place in October 2021.

Ian Rollins, on the Diamond Races Supporters' Group Facebook page, said: "There is no connection between Diamond Races and the Isle of Man TT. At this moment Diamond Races will still be going ahead. Dates TBC."

On another post, he said: "If you are looking for cast iron guarantees I'm afraid there aren't any.

"Nothing can be set in stone as we have seen with the TT. Covid aside, work continues unabated on the Isle of Wight and beyond to deliver the event as planned.

"As soon as we have confirmed dates and more details, they will be released on this page and the official website."

The Diamond Races has the backing of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce.

However, parish councils are yet to give their full support.
