Christian Williams spends his life either behind the wheel of a supercar or a microphone. In the latest instalment of his exciting monthly motoring column for the County Press, the DJ and ‘most hugged man in Britain’ tells us of his fears for the humble automobile.

Picking up a Ferrari 458 (main picture) on the day the government brought forward its ban on petrol and diesel cars seemed perhaps a little ill-timed, yet it reminded me of the sheer joy derived from an internal combustion engine.

Nothing quite beats the sound of a V8 at 9000rpm, especially one that’s cloaked beneath a red flying machine from arguably the most lusted after marque in the world.

But what does the ban mean? And we will soon forget the petrol pleasures and replace them with more sedate ones?

According to certain reports, the ban will give a £4.2bn boost to the economy, creating 30,000 jobs. And while the first electric cars which came to market were dreadful creations — just the thought of a G-Wiz is enough to bring me out in a cold sweat — the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model X show just how far the industry has come in recent years.

Yet while the hand-wringing will last for some time, I’m convinced there will always be a place for the petrol car in the same way we still have the horse and cart.

After all, the thought of no sound being emitted once you start the car is not something I want to get used to quite yet.

As a result, my own car pool is getting something of an overhaul. And not the way you’d expect. For instead of continuing down the electric line (Hybrid) with my Golf GTE, I’m actually looking to invest in something petrol-driven just because it looks like we’ll only have a limited time left with them.

I’ve been lucky enough to own a Porsche GT3 for a couple of years but the reason the Ferrari turned up at the garage was because my head is being seriously turned by the normally-aspirated V8. There may not be much time left for these kings of the road, so I’m going to try everything in my power to steal a part of its history.

Hopefully by the time 2030 comes around BMW’s engineers will have righted the wrongs they’ve made with the new iX.... I actually feel sorry for the BMW salesman trying to sell those…the front grille looks like an angry rabbit!

Isle of Wight County Press:

The new BMW iX.

Thankfully I’ve also been behind the wheel of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, handing it over to one of the winners at BOTB, a rather shocked London chef.

BMW should be taking a leaf out of Alfa’s books as they constantly deliver both on looks and performance. It’s a pricey saloon, coming in at around £60,000, but it’s great to drive.

On the one hand it can be scary (as the only way to open the exhaust valves for a deeper note is by engaging RACE mode… this also turns the traction control off!) but it’s just as comfortable on a trip to the shops. One thing it has by the bucketload is soul, so BMW take note.

On the radio front, it’s a little strange doing our shows without the usual hustle and bustle of celebrity guests and their entourages.

Normally the corridors and receptions at Virgin Radio are bursting with big names, adding a nice touch of glamour to proceedings, but with Covid-19 still doing its best to disrupt our daily lives they’re dialing, or Zooming in instead.

That said, it does give you a tiny glimpse into their reality — we’ve had James Blunt calling in from a sun-soaked Ibiza and Jensen Button calling up to talk us through his upcoming performance in the British GT Championship. Nothing ever replaces chatting to guests in the flesh so we’re hoping life can return to normal pretty quick!

Car hit of the month: Audi RS6. I drove this over to a BOTB winner who started crying his eyes out. When his wife and daughter started crying it set me off too. What a car!

Car miss of the month: new BMW iX — they have lost the plot. Think evil rabbit!

Tune of the month: Jake Bugg — All I Need

Top speed: Well, not the fastest I’ve been but great fun nonetheless — my test drive of the GREYP electric bike which does a pretty nifty 40mph.
