THIS week's Pub of the Week had dozens of nominations from its loyal customers — and it's easy to see why.

The Old Village Inn in Bembridge High Street — aka Ye Olde Village Inn — has overcome more than just Covid-19. Run by Jay and Kelly Chapman, The Old Village Inn was found to require urgent building work earlier this year, which meant the interior was unusable.

Customer Neil Barton explained: "They have worked so hard, by taking out the car parking and completely building a new Covid-protected pub externally with new external bar, toilets and individual seating arrangements with a bell and table service only.

"Now they have taken apart the whole of the inside of the pub and re-built that to be as safe as possible for customers to remain socially distanced with all booths and tables have a bell for service and with table service.

"On top of that there is always a fantastic atmosphere with top quality service from everyone that works there, good food, good service, good beers and good music and Jay and his wife are top landlords."

Fellow customer Gabrielle Allen commented: "The team has spent all this time during the pandemic working every day to get the pub up and running. In the first lockdown they supplied takeaways and had a seed/plant station for swaps. They have used the whole car park at the back to transform it into a Bohemian Festival vibe and the pizza oven was well used in the summer when allowed too."

The customer's comments have kept flowing. Sue MacLeod said: "It's a proper community pub which is busy all year. Great atmosphere, delicious food, friendly staff — and a landlord and landlady that really care about the community they are part of."

The Holme family commented: "There's not many places you can go where you feel at ease, safe and welcomed. The whole team go above and beyond to make sure your visit is a good one. Outstanding food, amazing ambience, perfect pub, fabulous staff, and landlords that give everything! It feels like home, every detail is thought about and everything you ask for is given with a smile and gratitude."

Nicola Upton said: "I love the friendliness of the staff, particularly Iolandin, Kelly and Jay, the coolness of the setting, and the food and music! It’s like a bit of London brought to a sleepy little Island village — very quirky. It’s also well known for its mind-blowing curry and pizzas."

Helen Butler said the pub has made "brave and inspirational adaptations during challenging times," while Paul Knights said the staff are legends in the village.
