A DEPRAVED West Wight man who admitted a number of child sexual offences, including rape and sexual assaults against nine victims, has been jailed for life today (Monday).

Jonathan Richard Maertens, 35, of Richmond Meade, Freshwater, made 209,380 indecent images of children.

He also made 9,027 movies.

The images and films ranged from category A, the most serious kind, to category C.

Of the images seized, 12,344 pictures and 2,479 films were made by him, Isle of Wight Crown Court was told.

It heard his offending had continued for almost ten years.

As he was led from court, one of those in the courtroom shouted, "You're a monster."

Police seized sophisticated video equipment, recording devices, his computer and other devices, drugs (including a type of sleeping pill) and other items.

He has been handed a life sentence, to serve a minimum of 16 years before he can be considered for parole.

Judge Tim Mousley also made Maertens subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and he has been placed on the sex offenders' register.

Judge Mousley said: "Sixteen years is not a fixed term. You may never be released. If released, you will be on licence for the rest of your life."

Maertens is banned from working with children and vulnerable adults.

He had previously pleaded guilty to 36 offences, including a drugs charge and assault of a police officer.
