The traffic delays that have dogged the Newport to Cowes road over the past year, look like coming to an end as work on Newport's St Mary's junction appears to have been completed on schedule.
The final phase of the works, which saw the St Mary's roundabout replaced with a signal-controlled junction, was completed over the weekend.
During this phase, the main work involved removing the temporary roundabout and putting in ithe first elements of the new signalised junction.
Island Roads have also been constructing the new bus lane at the top of Hunnyhill and installing a signal- controlled pedestrian crossing.
These stunning aerial shots of the roundabout were taken by Steve Mew yesterday (Sunday) and show the potential of a fluid flow of traffic, a theory likely to be put to the test during this week's morning and early evening rush hours.
The final phase of the work to layout Parkhurst Road as a cul-de-sac with no through access will begin today and is scheduled for completion by December 18.
The Isle of Wight Council plans to issue a statement on the latest developments shortly.
