AN APPEAL has been set up for a charity left reeling after a suspected arson attack on its headquarters.

Friends of the Animals has been left devastated after a fire at the offices on Riverway, Newport, yesterday morning.

Police confirmed they are investigating the incident as arson and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101, quoting 44200447554.

The charity believes an accelerant was used to start the fire.

Fortunately, no one was hurt and the emergency services arrived in time to prevent the flames spreading to the main body of the building.

A spokesperson for the charity said: "A company arrived and has boarded up the front of the building and a Lifeline engineer had to be called out to clear the smoke and re-set the fire alarm.

"We are hugely grateful to everyone who came to our assistance. Thank you all. Our lives are spent helping animals, and people, and we are all utterly dismayed that anyone would have done this.

"Coronavirus has hit Friends of the Animals hard. For a long time, we have been the only island charity helping the public with the cost of veterinary treatment for sick and injured animals and this shocking act is the last thing we needed.

"Sadly, this event has cost our animals and we would be very grateful for any help our supporters can give us."
