I was saddened but not surprised by the proposal to build on the greenfield site in Landscape Lane on the edge of Newport. Saddened because there continue to be several brownfield sites within the town which could be used for housing, but not surprised because councils of all colours have not been able to do anything about them.

They have been undeveloped for decades and in one case about a century.

There is the long-derelict bank which is a real eyesore, there is the old warehouse behind the Bargeman’s, and most obviously, there is the large area at the bottom of South Street which has languished undeveloped for decades, almost in sight of County Hall.

Indeed a part of this latter site has, to my certain knowledge, been derelict since the '60s, and I believe, although I am sure someone will correct me, it was the result of bomb damage during Second World War.

One wonders how much longer it will be empty or who would have the clout to do anything about it.

If Mr Seely can get South Street developed he will earn my undying admiration.
