MORE than three times the drink drive limit, a woman crashed into and badly damaged a parked car.

Kathryn Gannon, 59, of Lea Road, Lake, was driving along Leeson Road in Upper Bonchurch, on September 18, when the collision occurred, Island magistrates heard on Friday.

She admitted driving with excess alcohol. Her breath reading was 108 when the legal limit is 35.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said Gannon crashed into the back of a parked car, and when she got out of her vehicle, a Kia Picanto, she was unsteady on her feet.

The driver of another vehicle stopped, as they had been following Gannon, and were concerned about her driving before the crash, so stopped to ensure she didn't drive off.

Ms Miller said aggravating factors included the damage to the parked car.

James Cameron, representing Gannon, said she said no previous convictions.

He said: "She is a full-time carer for her husband and it all got a bit much for her. Her way of coping was alcohol.

"She doesn't recall going to Ventnor. She was having a real sort of meltdown. Covid is hard for those totally isolated.

"She wants to get help for the alcohol and has started the process of dealing with it."

Gannon was banned from driving for 26 months.

She was also given a 12-month community order to include ten rehabilitation days, and must pay a £120 fine, £95 surcharge and £85 costs.
