SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE DIV. 1

NEWPORT 0, UNITED SERVICE PORTSMOUTH 3

NEWPORT lost their third consecutive game in all competitions against one of the favourites at the start of the season to go up.

Although United Services Portsmouth have had an indifferent start to their campaign, they looked pretty comfortable against a Newport side who were scoring freely a couple of weeks ago and on a high.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play on 23 minutes when their striker went one on one with Port keeper Joe McCormack and slotted home from an acute angle — although there was a hint of offside.

After Scott Barron went into the referee’s notebook for a mistimed tackle, Port’s top scorer this season, Connor Kelly, was unlucky to see his shot cannon back off the upright following a Josh Younie free kick parried into his path on 36 minutes.

Despite their dominance in the opening period, Newport could not break through Portsmouth’s defence.

With only a goal in it at the start of the second half, Newport had all to play for.

But Portsmouth doubled their lead on 49 minutes through Tyler Morret to quiet down the 126 crowd.

Newport were on the back foot and were rocked by a killer third goal for the visitors two minutes later through a Jake Wright own goal.
