THERE has not been more than one coronavirus patient in St Mary's Hospital at any one time, since the beginning of August.

Latest data, published by the NHS, shows either none, or just one, patients have been recorded at the Newport hospital at any one time, for several weeks.

Of the 79 days between August 1 and October 18, on 69 of them the hospital had no Covid-19 patients.

There were no Covid-19 patients from August 2 until August 26. There was a bed occupied on August 26 and 27.

From August 28 there were no patients until September 10, then a bed occupied on September 10 and 11.

There were no patients at all from September 12 through to October 5, and again there were none between October 13 and October 18, which is when the current data runs to.

During October there have so far been 86 positive cases recorded, but only a few days when one bed was occupied at St Mary's.

The Island has had 563 recorded cases of coronavirus since the outbreak began in March.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said: "Our patients and staff are our top priority and should we experience a rise in Covid-19 patients in hospital, we are fully prepared to provide care and treatment safely.

"Dealing with the crisis since March means we have a wealth of experience from increasing our capacity quickly to providing services while wearing PPE and implementing important infection control measures.

"We are here to meet the needs of the Island community."
