NEWPORT hit form at just the right time to play Alton in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase — edging the tie with a spot kick.

After an even start to the tie, Port took the lead on 21 minutes — Connor KELLY confidently sending the Alton keeper the wrong way — after Joe Butcher was hauled down in the box.

Alton hit back, forcing Gary Streeter to make a smart save down to his left to deny an equaliser from a deflected shot inside the box.

After the interval, the visitors were denied again by Streeter with a diving save to his right from a strike outside the penalty area.

On the hour, a long ball by Neo Lamb found Butcher, who went through one on one with the keeper, but shot just wide.

After Alton missed a sitter from a yard out, Port striker Jordan Browne was unlucky to his effort go just wide on 75 minutes.

Butcher could have made the game safe on 85 minutes had his curling shot not crash back off the bar.

Alton piled on some late pressure, but Newport held out to record another great FA Vase victory.

Cowes Sports will not join Newport in the next round after they were beaten 4-1 at home to Pagham.

The Yachtsmen had a mountain to climb after shipping three of the goals in a poor first half.

But Cowes boss Max Draper would have called on his struggling Wessex Premier side to show some pride in the second half — and that's exactly what he got.

After the break, Fin Phillips and Callum Chase forced the Pagham keeper into making a couple of smart saves — and their pressure eventually paid off when Jimmy Wykes smashed one home, to reduce the deficit.

However, despite their best efforts, Cowes conceded again on 80 minutes.

In Sydenhams Wessex Division 1, East Cowes Vics earned a good point in a 1-1 draw away at Folland Sports.

Vics took the lead from the spot on 25 minutes, but the home side levelled on 58 minutes.

The Island League's match of the day was Division 1 clash between Whitecroft and Barton Sports and Shanklin, with both side going into it with four wins out of four.

It was Shanklin who came out on top, winning 2-1 with goals by skipper Iain Seabrok from the spot, after Kyle Drew was hauled down by the keeper, and George Carter-Knight after Sam Mosely dispossessed Keelan Sainsbury.

Joe Rayner scored W&B's goal from the penalty spot after Wayne Newnham brought down Josh Appell.

After the game, Shanklin boss Paul Haward was delighted with the result.

He said: "Everything went our way today with our result and others in the league. It really couldn't have gone any better.

"If we had come away with a point from W&B, I would've been delighted. Today's win, against a side who had not lost at home in four seasons, is very special.

"The squad is in a good place right now."

There were other surprising results, which saw Brading Town go down 2-1 at Northwood St John and Sandown 4-3 at bottom side Carisbrooke United.

In Division 2, the leaders, Oakfield, hammered Newchurch 10-0.
