THE Royal Marines Association on the Isle of Wight, with other team members on the mainland, are quarter of the way through an ambitious charity event.

The Around the World in 80 days virtual trek, which involves individually recorded daily walks, is being undertaken by a 30-strong team tasked with covering 77 miles per week for the duration of the challenge.

Participants have to date covered 6,764 out of 24,911 miles, a feat which would put them in Burma.

The event is raising money for Royal Marine charities through www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rmaiow, with more than £3,200 already raised by a total of 85 supporters.

Around the World in 80 days began on September 1 and is scheduled to run through until November 19.
