MEMORIAL benches in Sandown have had their plaques removed by suspected vandals.

Cllr Debbie Andre says the benches, located close to Steven Jenkins Rainbow Playground, appear to have become the targets of mindless vandalism.

"I've contacted the clerk to check, but it would be unusual to remove the plaques for cleaning," said Cllr Andre.

"It's evident that some of the screws were not removed properly and it looks like the plaques have been broken off.

"Why would anyone want to do that? It must be so distressing for the families, my thoughts go out to them.

"There has been a spate recently of people not using the facilities in the area as intended.

"I don't know what they were hoping to achieve by doing something like this.

"The sooner we get CCTV the better.

"Sandown Town Council agreed on Monday evening to go ahead with implementing CCTV in that area, and the system we're looking at will be able to be remotely monitored.

"We've managed to secure a grant to fund it, so in the future, we will be able to identify those not respecting the facilities."
