A RYDE man has been jailed for an alcohol-fuelled unprovoked attack on two victims.

Joseph Augustus Gulliver headbutted a landlord twice and stamped on another man's head.

Gulliver, 37, of Harding Road, was given a 22-month custodial sentence at the Isle of Wight Crown Court last Friday.

He admitted two assaults occasioning actual bodily harm on the evening of October 12, 2019.

Edward Elton, prosecuting, said Gulliver had been drinking at the Simeon Arms until 'drinking up time'.

He went outside for a cigarette but attempted to go back in, which the landlord pointed out was illegal.

Gulliver threw insults and tried to push the door as the landlord tried to close it.

Mr Elton said: "Gulliver headbutted the landlord and punched him in the face.

"A member of the public also received kicks to the head and torso after trying to intervene.

"Gulliver then headbutted the landlord once again before walking off.

"The second victim was left with a large scar across his head.

"This victim's wife clearly saw this out-of-control person stamping on her husband's head, with no thought of his actions.

"It should have been a quiet night out at a local pub."

Mr Elton said it was a sustained assaulted with aggravating factors that the second victim got attacked after trying to help and in the presence of his wife.

Graham Gilbert, defending, said Gulliver had expressed remorse, and 'may have mental health issues' that explain his behaviour.

Gulliver had lost his father and his best friend last year, and had used drink to suppress his emotions.

He had abstained from alcohol since that night, last October, and had given up his drinking acquaintances.

Gulliver had 18 previous convictions for 36 offences, and had served time for importing prohibited weapons.

Judge Susan Evans said: "This was shocking alcohol-fuelled violence in a public place."

He was ordered to pay a £149 victim surcharge and was jailed for 22 months.
