While the current house is believed to have been largely re-built around 1895, it is constructed on the footprint of an older house, The Medina Hermitage, which was the seat of Michael Hoy, a successful merchant who established strong trading links with Russia.

Michael Hoy had the nearby Hoy monument — also called the Alexandrian Pillar — erected on top of St Catherine’s Down to commemorate the visit to Britain, in 1814, of His Imperial Majesty Alexander I of Russia.

The house, having been a full-time private home, is currently used as a second home and a profitable boutique holiday let which is currently generating around £115,000 of gross income per annum.

There are ten double rooms with en-suite facilities, which are all individually styled, plus some extremely impressive reception rooms on the ground floor with a kitchen/diner which measures some 40ft long.

The entrance hall is an impressive and spacious area with an oak staircase with carved newel posts and there is an ornate fire surround housing a wood-burning stove.

The drawing room is an elegant panelled room with an open fireplace with marble surround, original wooden floorboards and two sets of French doors providing access to the raised terrace and garden.

Isle of Wight County Press:

There is also a games room and gym on the ground floor, as well as a useful snug, a children’s playroom, a well-equipped utility room and an adjacent boot room. The Hermitage also has cellars.

Upstairs on the first floor, there are four bedroom suites on the southern landing, while the northern landing leads to a further six bedroom suites.

Outside, to the front of the house is a large stone-paved terrace with a central ornamental fish pond, as well as are lawns which are surrounded by mature woodland providing a secluded and private setting. There is parking, plus a double garage, as well as a walled garden, woodland and a separate paddock of about 1.7 acres.
