At 1.28pm, fire crews from Newport and Ryde were called to the scene at Rope Walk, off Medina Road.
The workman was reported to have fallen backwards off a roof, and was then stuck suspended in a harness, attached to a three-story building with scaffolding.
A spokesperson for Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said they were called to assist the ambulance service with the male casualty.
The incident is ongoing.
UPDATE 3pm:
Fire crews used an aerial ladder platform to reach the casualty.
The workman has been rescued and is now in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
