A DRUG driver more than three times the legal limit, was banned from driving for a year.

Terry Phillips, 32, admitted driving a Transit van with cannabis above the specified limit, on High Park Road, Ryde, during the early hours of February 15.

He also pleaded guilty to offences of driving without an MOT certificate or licence on that date.

Phillips, of Salisbury Road, Ryde, came to the attention of the police by how badly his van was parked.

As officers approached, Phillips suddenly drove off and was subsequently stopped, said Liz Miller, prosecuting, at the IW Magistrates Court, on Tuesday.

The condition of Phillips led officers to give him a roadside swab test, followed by a blood test at the police station. His reading was 7 microgrammes — the legal limit is 2.

"There was no evidence of bad driving, just bad parking," said Miss Miller.

The bench was told Phillips was convicted of drink driving in 2008.

For Phillips, David Cameron, said following the incident, his client referred himself to a three-month drug detox programme, for which Phillips was commended by presiding magistrate, Gordon Cooper.

Alongside his driving ban, Phillips was fined £120, with £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
