Fudge fan walks more than 220 miles for Isle of Wight vegan treat

Agata Szczepaniuk told owner Rachel Powell she had bought some vegan Slab fudge in her home town of Leeds and did some research to find out where it had come from.

She loved it so much that decided to set herself a memorable challenge!

Agata said “I found Slab was based on the Isle of Wight, and that a shop existed where all the fudge was made!

"Lockdown had made a big chunk of 2020 very boring for me and I had been stuck at home a lot. I thought why not do something I will never forget?

"Right there and then I decided to walk all the way from Leeds to the Southampton ferry terminal, catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight and visit Slab!”

So she did...and she recorded the whole lot on Instagram.

Agata ordered a parcel of fudge to be delivered to her home, to keep her going during her pilgrimage.

Then, on August 23, she left Leeds for an incredible 221 mile walk.

The journey took eleven days and, as she went, she kept the followers of her @misssolidunplan account updated.

Her first stop was near Sheffield, her final was Southampton and her only other mode of transport was a Red Funnel crossing to the Island!

Rachel Powell has been making fudge for six years, and two years ago set herself the challenge of creating a vegan alternative that tasted as good as dairy.

She said: “It took a while to get it right and I knew I was there when I was taking home vegan Slabs to eat instead of dairy!”
