Health bosses on the Isle of Wight have moved quickly to refute statistics which appeared to show the first hospital death since June.

Figures from NHS England showed the number of deaths at St Mary's Hospital now stands at 40 but the IW NHS Trust has told the County Press the latest increase is due to a death from May being added to the numbers...not that there was a death in September.

A spokesman said: “This death occurred in May and has been recorded retrospectively following the completion of the coronial process and in line with the guidance from NHS England.” A further 48 people confirmed to have coronavirus have died in care homes, hospices and at home, meaning the combined total for the Island now stands at 88. The UK has 347,152 confirmed cases with 41,551 people having died as of yesterday's updated figures.
