POLICE have confirmed the man in custody following an attack on a little girl has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

The serious sexual assault took place in broad daylight at Fort Victoria Country Park on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday.

A three-year-old girl was assaulted in woodland and police have appealed for anyone in the area at the time to come forward.

The woodland and toilets at Fort Victoria have been cordoned off and a team of police have been there overnight.

Extra officers have been drafted in from the Hampshire Constabulary.

The little girl and her family are being looked after by specialist support officers.

A man aged in his 60s remains in police custody.

Police have 24 hours in which they can keep the man in custody, before he is either released or charged.

There are extensions – but they need authority and only in extenuating circumstances.

Evidence of the crime is being gathered at Fort Victoria, where a high police presence is expected again today.
