CONGRATULATIONS are in order for 25 intrepid swimmers who braved choppy conditions to complete the Solent Swim this Bank Holiday Monday.

The swim — in aid of West Wight Sports and Community Centre — had to be postponed at the weekend due to exceptionally windy weather.

Rescheduled for today, the swimmers left Hurst Castle at 9.45am, and Charlie Bagot was the first swimmer to arrive at Colwell Bay, 34 minutes later.

This was Charlie's fifth Solent Swim, of which he's been first swimmer four times.

He said: "It was very rough in the middle section, which made it hard work.

"It's good we were able to organise it for today, after the windy weather on Saturday and Sunday."

Charlie said the event was always enjoyable, and was pleased to support the work of West Wight Sports and Community Centre.

Also among the swimmers was Isle of Wight MP, Bob Seely, as well as Megan Eggeling, who at 78 was the oldest swimmer.

Wendy Wheeler, 48, who has secondary cancer, used the swim as a platform to show how people can live well with terminal illness.

Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and a fleet of kayakers ensured the safety of the swimmers throughout.
