A TWO-CAR collision has happened at Winford Road near Apse Heath and Newchurch today (Wednesday).

The main road through Apse Heath has been closed by Isle of Wight Police and diversions are being put in place.

The Isle of Wight Fire Service has sent crews from Newport, Sandown and Shanklin to the scene.

The accident has only recently taken place, at around 5.15pm.

UPDATE: Southern Vectis said: "Police have closed the road between Apse Heath and Branstone Cross owing to an accident.

"Traffic is being diverted which may cause delays to route 8. We hope the accident is not serious."

UPDATE 6.30pm: Isle of Wight Police have appealed for a key witness to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently dealing with a collision on the main road near to Apse Heath at Newchurch Cross. We are seeking any witnesses to this incident.

"We also urgently need to speak to a female witness who spoke to colleagues and subsequently left the scene before we could get further details.

"If this is you, please make contact ASAP. Incident reference 44200307003.

"Please also avoid the area as road closures are in place and the road will remain closed until further notice."

UPDATE 7pm: One casualty has been flown to Southampton General by air ambulance, and another casualty has been taken to St Mary's Hospital. 

Fire crews had to extricate one of the casualties from a vehicle.

A stop message came in to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service at 6.45pm.
