An investigation is underway, after a number of caravans pitched up on Isle of Wight Council land at Smallbrook, near Ryde.

They arrived late last week.

A local authority spokesperson said: “The Isle of Wight council is investigating, which will include a visit to the site by a liaison officer.

“Once the current situation is fully understood, the council will be in a position to consider what action to take.”

In January, the County Press reported that the Isle of Wight Council was due to explore the allocation of traveller sites here, after government funding was made available.

The proposal was to create dedicated sites with a safe place to access water and sanitation.
