FIREFIGHTERS have been called to reports of a fire in the open in East Cowes this morning (Tuesday).

Crews from Newport, Ventnor and Ryde were called to the scene shortly before 10am, and upon arrival discovered the fire to be an out of control bonfire.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire Service said: "We received a call at 9.52am today about a fire in the East Cowes area.

"Two pumps from Ryde and Newport, and a water carrier from Ventnor arrived at the location shortly afterwards.

"Upon arrival it was discovered that this was an attended bonfire, crews remain at the scene at this time."

The fire service has recently reminded people when having a bonfire to please contact Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service Control to inform them beforehand.
