The body of a man aged in his sixties has been found on the banks of the river Medina this morning (Wednesday).

Hampshire Constabulary says it was called to the shoreside at about 7:40am.

Although formal identification is still being carried out, police say the family of a man reported missing from Cowes this morning has been informed.

The force says the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

HM Coastguard says it has been assisting Hampshire Police since just before 8am.

The Ventnor Coastguard Rescue team and Cowes RNLI lifeboat are among the emergency crews who were called to the banks of the river.

It follows an overnight operation by Bembridge and Ventnor coastguard teams and Cowes lifeboat.

The Isle of Wight County Press has been told that teams were called out after cries for help were heard at around 1:45am, near the Floating Bridge which connects the towns of Cowes and East Cowes.

Isle of Wight police have been on scene on the Cowes side of the river today.
