THE driver of a Mercedes which crashed at Shide Road, Newport, in the early hours, has been hospitalised with serious injuries.

The vehicle careered into bollards on both sides of the road, at around 2.23am.

Isle of Wight Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service attended the scene, and the casualty was taken to St Mary's Hospital.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called out to an incident at 2.23am this morning, July 28, following a single-vehicle collision on Shide Road, Newport.

"A Mercedes veered into concrete bollards on either side of the road. A man was taken to St Mary's Hospital with major injuries.

"No arrests have been made at this stage, pending further investigation."
