TWO walkers have been lifted to safety by the Coastguard helicopter near Niton this afternoon after becoming cut off by the tide.

The pair found themselves stranded to the left of Castlehaven beach and were forced to climb the cliff to avoid the water. After an initial call to the police at 3.46pm, an multi-agency emergency response was put in place by Solent Coastguard.

Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat went out and identified the location of the stricken walkers, and Ventnor and Needles Coastguard Rescue Teams assisted in the rescue.

The helicopter flew in and lifted the walkers from the cliff face.

The two adults have now been rescued and are safe and well.
