Mr Hancock has just told the House of Commons: "In recent weeks, we have reopened retail. We want to give more confidence.

"Sales assistants, cashiers and security gaurds have suffered disproportionally in this crisis. As we restore shopping, so we must keep our shop keepers safe.

"Face coverings should be mandatory in shops and supermarkets.

"People will face a fine of up to £100 [if they do not wear one.]

"Children under 11 and those with certain disabilities will be exempt.

"The police have formal enforcement powers and can issue a fine.

"Wearing a face covering does not mean we can ignore the other measures; washing your hands, following the rels of social distancing."

Mr Hancock said there is evidence that suggests facecovering can increase confience for shoppers.

The government has been criticised for introducing the policy too slowly.
