A SANDOWN man has pleaded guilty to drink driving after causing a car crash in Yarmouth that saw one vehicle forced off the road.

David William Hazell, 29, of Halford Close, pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving without due care and attention on March 8 when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

He was nearly four times the legal alcohol limit.

The court heard how Hazell had been driving on Bouldnor Road, to get fast food, when he ran into the back of a Mini at speed, causing it to be forced off the road.

Hazell's Vauxhall was forced out into the middle of the road where it then collided with a Mazda.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, said: "Police were called to the road in Yarmouth where Mr Hazell produced a roadside breath test of 138. The legal limit is 35.

"He told police he had not been drinking that day but had been drinking quite heavily the night before.

"He had to be extracted from the vehicle by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and was taken to St Mary's Hospital.

"He last appeared in court in 2017 for another case of driving without due care and attention."

Defending, Barry Arnett, said: "He fully cooperated with police when they were taking samples and he tells me he has taken steps to address his alcohol use.

"He knows he made an error in judgement and he wholeheartedly accepts he is guilty of these offences."

Magistrates gave Hazell a 12-month community order and a 25-month ban from driving.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of £240, a victim surcharge of £90 and court costs of £85.
