According to police, the boy is "likely to make a full recovery, and is not as seriously injured as it first appeared".

They said the driver of the vehicle involved was not at fault for the incident, and that the boy "made a mistake many of us will have made in the past" by crossing the road while distracted by his headphones and/or mobile phone.

A spokesperson for Isle of Wight Police said: "Had the driver not been keeping to the speed limit, this could have been a much more severe outcome for the injured party.

"You are more likely to kill or seriously injure someone if you exceed the speed limits.

"Pedestrians are equally responsible for following the highway code, and this is a plea to all teenagers to not use mobiles or headphones while crossing the road.

"We desperately do not want to be dealing with serious injury matters like this, which can be so avoidable, and want all drivers and road users to be safe and considerate on our roads.

"The investigation team would like to take this opportunity to thank the driver and witnesses who stopped to assist with immediate first aid in this incident."
