Isle of Wight GCSE, AS and A levels students, who could not sit their exams because of coronavirus, may be able to appeal, or choose to sit exams, if they want to improve their grades.

Following a consultation, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), which regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England, has announced its plan.

It said, a student who believed there had been a serious failing when marks were assessed and handed out would be able to appeal the teacher-awarded grades, through their school or college.

After all exams were cancelled due to Covid-19, Ofqual has confirmed that those unable to receive a calculated result, or who want to improve their grades, can take the full suite of GCSE, AS and A level exams in the autumn.

Students may choose to sit exams in any subject - not just the core subjects - despite fears being raised about pressures on schools. Marks will only be based on those exams. Art and design qualifications will be assessed based on non-exam assessments, but in other subjects coursework would not be valid.

Ofqual said replacement certificates for the summer results must be issued afer the autumn, if requested by students.

It says it is working to finalise the exact timing of the exams in due course, aiming for AS and A levels to be held in October and GCSEs in November.
