VISITORS have been allowed to return to the Isle of Wight Zoo — and from tomorrow (Saturday) even more areas will be open.

The education centre, shop and play area has been prepared for the 'new normal' — providing an even greater experience for the visitors who choose to spend a day at the zoo and support the attraction through these uncertain times.

A spokesperson for the zoo's Wildheart Trust said: "We’re so excited to be able to open fully from July 4.

"When our site was forced to close on March 24, the trust faced an uncertain future.

"Although the doors were closed, the care of our animals had to continue uncompromised, to ensure we could provide each and every one with the sanctuary we promised them when they were rescued.

"This was no easy task with overheads amounting to nearly £50,000 per month.

"Through resourcefulness, hard work and some thinking outside the box we were able to cut costs and focus our efforts on the animals' care.

"Island residents and our Wildheart friends further afield have overwhelmed us with their support.

"Whether it be pounds or produce, this support has kept us going and lifted our spirits when things looked bleak.

"We wouldn’t be here today without them, so it is fantastic to be able to open our whole site to provide a little sanctuary and support back.

"Our animals have certainly missed our guests and the fantastic interaction they provide. After three-and-a-half months of seeing the same four faces every day they have really enjoyed the return of our visitors.

"Our animal carers are feeding the animals throughout the day, so although we are not doing any official talks, you can be assured of seeing the animals out and active no matter when you visit.

"We will still need to keep numbers capped to ensure everyone can enjoy their day out safely, so to avoid disappointment, we recommend booking your visit in advance via our website isleofwightzoo.com

"We look forward to seeing everyone soon."
