A COMMEMORATIVE bench has been installed in Gunville on the outskirts of Newport, and another is set to grace Newport Quay.

Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council have installed a VE Day commemorative bench outside the Methodist Church at Gunville Road.

A bench of this same design is also due to be installed along Newport Quay in the coming weeks.

Cllr Terry Martin, ward member for Carisbrooke said: “The old wooden bench was starting to get a bit sad with age, as it had been in place there for approximately 15 years.

"It seemed appropriate to replace the bench and also take the opportunity to celebrate VE Day.”

Gunville Association had planned a VE Day celebration which would have included the official unveiling of the bench, but plans were placed on hold due to the coronavirus.
