TWO people remain in custody this morning following a car crash in Forest Road, Newport, late last night.

Three men were arrested after running away from the scene.

One was found in a nearby garden, according to an onlooker.

A 25-year-old man from Newport was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when his alcohol level was above the limit, but he was later released with no further action.

A 27-year-old man from Newport was arrested on suspicion of using a motor vehicle on a road/public place without third party insurance, driving while disqualified, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop after a road accident and driving while unfit through drink. He remains in police custody at this time.

A 29-year-old man from Newport was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, theft, and failing to stop after a road accident. He also remains in police custody at this time.

An IW Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.23pm on June 19 to a report of a single vehicle collision on Forest Road.

"A Nissan Qashqui had collided with a lamppost. The occupants were reported as running away from the scene.

"Officers deployed to the area to carry out a search and subsequently arrested three men. The vehicle was also recovered.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

The incident happened near the lane that joins Forest Road to Whitesmith Road, near Hunnyhill Primary School.

A local resident said they heard a screeching noise and a smashing sound just before 10.30pm, and went outside to see what had happened.

He said: "Loads of people heard it and went outside to see what was going on. There's loads of people gathered around.

"The car smashed bollards, metal railings and knocked over a lamppost."
