AN ISLE of Wight cyclist has completed a gruelling virtual 1,084 mile bike ride, raising money for two charities.

Ian Gregory, of Gunville, set himself up in the courtyard of the Church On The Roundabout, Newport, riding a virtual extended route from Lands End to John O'Groats.

Ian streamed his journey on online cycling app, Zwift, which allowed others to ride with him for short periods of time.

"Typically, before attempting such a challenge I have many miles under my belt both out on the road and from other fundraising events," said Ian.

"My legs very soon informed me that I was lacking this training, and I started to question if I could actually make it before the end.

"After 320 difficult miles, at around 8.30pm I called it and packed down for the night.

"Day two, I plodded my way through another 320 miles, and on day three there was a meet up online with some of the Prostate Cancer UK Grand Depart Cycling Club, where we cycled for an hour or so together.

"The pace was fast and to be honest I seemed to lead the way for a considerable chunk, which gave me the chance to really warm up and forget about the miles clicking over slowly.

"The day ended early on 934 miles as we had to try to find a way of tying down our setup so it wouldn't blow away in the strong winds.

"Day four was the final push, and we had a jump in donations and a great deal of well wishes coming through social media sites.

"I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated, and to Tony Murphy and the crew at the church for letting us use the site, power and internet for this challenge."

Ian has raised more than £700 for Prostate Cancer UK and NHS Charities Together Covid-19 Urgent Appeal.
