AN investigation is underway into what caused a fire in a flat in Newport earlier today (Monday).

A woman was rescued by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

She has since been flown from St Mary's Hospital to Southampton, by the crew of the coastguard helicopter.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire.

Crews from Newport, Cowes and East Cowes were among those called to the scene, at around 10am.

Pyle Street was closed after initial fears that more people were trapped inside. 

UPDATE 7am: 

Fire investigators, together with a support dog, were called to the property last night (Monday) to try to determine the cause of the fire.
