FIRE crews were called to tackle a fire 'deliberately' set in a tree near Freshwater woodland this afternoon (Thursday).

Crews from Freshwater Fire Station were called to Hurst Point View in Totland at around 7pm where a fire had been set inside the hollow of a tree.

A spokesperson for Freshwater Fire Station said: "We have just returned from a fire in woodland in Freshwater which appeared to have been deliberately set in a hollow tree.

"Fortunately a member of the public reported it and crew were able to extinguish it and damp down surrounding areas before it escalated.

"Crew used a foam extinguisher initially while hose was being run out to the area followed by a main jet to soak the area.

"There was substantial evidence of alcohol consumption and picnicking in the effected area and large amounts of rubbish.

"Please people be kind to our beautiful countryside"
