LIFEBOAT crews and the coastguard were called to concerns for eight people who had been 'going in circles' as they crossed the Solent.

Cowes RNLI alongside the UK Coastguard were alerted by members of the public when the group was seen to be having engine troubles among their four crafts this afternoon (Thursday.)

A spokesperson for the coastguard said: "We were called at about 6pm over concerns for a group of small ribs that had been thought to need assistance.

"The vehicles had been seen going in circles as they were crossing the Solent heading towards Calshot. The Cowes RNLI was called in to assist.

"The group eventually landed at Calshot and Ashlett Creek, they were spoken to and safety advice was given."
