FIRE CREWS were called to Newport town centre this afternoon (Thursday) after a gas meter burst into flames.

Crews from Newport Fire Station were called to the wall mounted meter on nearby Pyle Street at 11.14am this morning.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said: "We were called to a fire in the open on Pyle Street.

"A fire had begun to spread through the meter but crews were able to extinguish it and make the area safe.

"Crews left the scene at 1.24pm."
