THE Isle of Wight’s MP is quoted in today’s Mirror newspaper, in a report about a photo of a fortune cookie that it says was sent to a Whatspp group.
On her Twitter feed, Labour MP Sarah Owen called the meme an 'outdated joke' and said she would be happy to explain to the Secretary of State who shared the image, according to the Sunday Mirror, why it "fuels the recent spike in hate crimes against East Asians."
Anne-Marie Trevelyan has not commented on Twitter today (Sunday).
I appreciate @10DowningStreet isn’t doing apologies right now but if @annietrev doesn’t understand why sinophobia or her outdated joke are wrong, I’m happy to explain why it’s crap like this that fuels the recent spike in hate crimes against East Asians. https://t.co/62xmG3t09U

The Sunday Mirror says a meme of a Chinese fortune cookie, with a message saying “You not have coronavirus”, was shared by Secretary of State for International Development Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
The meme's legend calls the cookie a 'COVID-19 rapid test kit'.
A message underneath reads, 'just for Bob'.
MP Bob Seely is quoted in the Mirror's report saying: “It was a well-meaning joke at my expense and I didn’t think anything of it.”
The Isle of Wight County Press has asked Mr Seely if he would like to comment on the Mirror's report.
