THE search for a missing man in the West Wight is entering a second night.

Isle of Wight Police confirmed tonight that "searches are ongoing" — although coastguard search units have been stood down for the evening.

A spokesperson for the Maritime Coastguard Association said: "Needles and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams were assisting the police with a search for a missing person today.

"The coastguard rescue helicopter also helped with the search this afternoon.

"Coastguard search units have now stood down for the evening."

Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team said they have been tasked early this morning to resume the search, alongside Needles Coastguard Rescue Team, Yarmouth RNLI and Freshwater Lifeboat to support the police.

Searches have been carried out from Atherfield to Freshwater.

Hampshire Constabulary said officers were called out just before 7pm on Thursday night, after concerns were raised about a man in his 70s.

Isle of Wight Search and Rescue volunteers have also been involved in the search.
