VENTNOR carnival has cancelled its 2020 parades, joining Ryde, Sandown and Newport.

Organisers said: "It is with great regret that we announce that Ventnor will not be holding its usual carnivals this year.

"I am sure some of you will have expected this announcement and some of you will be disappointed at this decision — we all know how much Ventnor loves its carnival.

"Due to the current situation, it would be impossible to run a carnival while still maintaining the social distancing rules.

"We have had so much support from local businesses and the wonderful people of Ventnor over the years, which we are very grateful for.

"And we know that at present, a lot of our supporters are struggling and cannot help us in the usual way.

"We would like, if possible, to support the town, and if the government guidelines allow us, we may be able to hold smaller events.

"For instance, shops could still take part in the window spot and window decoration competitions which would encourage people back into their shops.

"There may be other events we could organise in place of the carnival, but we need to wait for official guidelines before making any further plans."

Ryde carnival announced its decision to cancel its parades earlier today.
